In the PICU

As soon as we walked in the door of Parker’s room he woke up and was in obvious pain, the nurse made a stat call for additional sedation and paralysis meds which took (what seemed like) forever to get here. Turns out that in one hour he’d run through 2 doses of PRN (as needed) meds that normally EACH last about two hours. We got that all sorted out and now his meds are on a constant drip and bolus doses are easier (and faster) to administer.

We KNOW that this is all part of the process . . . finding the right drugs in the right doses for each child. But it doesn’t make it any easier to watch. As he was breaking through the sedation he was overriding his ventilator. That is good that he is strong enough (and willful enough) to do it, but right now he needs to rest. Rest is not Parker’s middle name!

The overnight nurse seems on top of things so probably in another hour we are going to head back to the hotel for some much needed sleep.

Sedation is very tricky and what works now may not work in 12 hours. Just remember that. I’m glad you have a good nurse…that makes a HUGE difference. Just remember, rest all you can now while he’s sedated, once that tube is out, you will be BUSY!

I hope things continue to go well overnight. It sounds indeed like surgery went very well. What a blessing.

Good news! I’ve been on pins and needles all day. Did not have access to Parker’s blog at work, so relied on phone calls from Mom. We are all sending Parker restful, positive thoughts. We love you Parker!
